6.3 Summary

The ontologies of design space presented here represent practical definitions of the individuals, classes, attributes and relationships that are a standard means of defining a domain of discourse within a paradigm. The elements of each ontology delineate the characteristics of structure and behavior that would be judged against the Thriving Systems Choice properties to gauge the extent of any particular design choice’s quality. These five examples represent the detail and extent of scope definition required in order that design decisions may be determined and assessed.

Footnotes

1For convenience, all references to “ontology” in this text are intended to refer to a “special ontology.” In the formal nomenclature of philosophy, “ontology” without a restrictive adjective is a reference to the universal nature of “being” while a “special ontology” describes and delineates a specific subset of that universe by depicting a particular self-contained domain of discourse.
